I thought this would be the best place to share this fairly complicated theory/headcanon about Kedamono. The gist of it is in the title - Kedamono can see into the future.
We've seen in several episodes (i.e. "Pantomime" and "Mirage") that Kedamono is capable of forming physical objects using the power of his mind. He also has enhanced perception, as seen in "Sleep" and "Knife Game," where he noticed small details Popee could not. Using these facts alone, it is pretty safe to assume that Kedamono has psychic capabilities. But there is a key detail that supports precognition specifically - his masks! We've seen in "Face" and "Dark Side" that Kedamono is very capable of removing his masks, despite Popee's tireless efforts to remove them himself (when Kedamono was asleep). The question is, how on Earth did Kedamono know to wear as many masks as he did before Popee would stop trying to pull them off? How is it that the perfect mask for Kedamono's feelings is always underneath the current one he's wearing? Because it's a cartoon? Well yeah but WHAT IF Kedamono can see into the future, and predict what masks he'll need for the day??
That's when you ask, "If Kedamono can see into the future, why does he allow such horrible things to happen to him??" My guess is that Kedamono can see multiple paths into the future, and in each episode he is actually following the least dangerous path. For example, it could be either "Popee will stab me in the heart today" OR "Popee barrages me with bombs today." Which do you think Kedamono would go with? Either way, Kedamono's actions are the result of his trying to reach the best possible future. Some days he just can't help how awful everything turns out. He can predict the future, not change it.
Anyway I've been rambling A LOT so I'll stop there, ha ha. Tell me what you guys think if you want! Thanks for reading!!

ALSO!! Kedamono DID accurately predict the future once in "Samurai."

It might also explain why Kedamono is sometimes willing to kill Popee, and other times he tries to protect him. Kedamono's actions don't reflect how he feels about Popee, they reflect his desire to create the safest future possible. And by God, if protecting Popee means Kedamono won't get crushed by a random falling rock today, Kedamono will protect him.
I just really like this theory okay.

I think this is a really well thought out theory! It's very plausible. However, as nicely thought out as it is- I kind of just like the 'it's magic' theory; since, well, he CAN use pantomime to create invisible matter only he sees out of nothing. This might be a sketchy way to handle it, but I like that a bit more than the 'Kedamono can see into the future' thing. I absolutely adore it as an AU, though! I am crazy for weird 'timey-whimey' things like that.
